the taxonomy of Altinote eresia does not make much sense ; and it seems to be a rare species.

apart from A. e. lacrymosa which comes from Western Colombia, there are four ssp the types of which come from Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, with no collection data except for the Ecuador type which is from Baños.

from North to South we're supposed to have : eresia in Colombia, leptogramma in Ecuador, binghamae in Peru and eresina in Bolivia.
but all the specimens, but two, that we know from Ecuador, look like eresina ?! one, collected at the border with Colombia looks like binghamae from Peru, and the last one, collected in Southern Ecuador does not look like any described A. hilaris ; and although we spent hundreds of days collecting in the upper Pastaza valley, we never saw one single leptogramma !

we should also say that, looking for A. eresia pictures on the internet, we couldn't find one picture of any ssp other than eresina, some from Ecuador, a rather bright orange, and others from Manu road in Peru, a duller yellowish orange.

so, we are tempted to think that eresina could be the typical A. eresia which flies from Bolivia to, at least, Northern Ecuador, and that the other "ssp" are just forms, except lacrymosa.
