we found Teratophtalma maenades along rio Paute, at Sardinayacu, el Retiro, and las Estancias, Rio Negro, between 1400 and 1900 m.
we think that separating two subspecies, maenades and coronata, does not make much sense ; we believe we have one butterfly, with stronger white markings in the South, and, progressively, less white in the North.
females are very variable, they differ in appearance, but particularly in size.
