Heraclides torquatus occurs from Mexico to Argentina and Brasil with many subspecies. Ecuadorian populations are represented by two subspecies (Bollino & Onore 2001), one East, and one West of the Andes.


the oriental subspecies Heraclides torquatus torquatus is not rare, but usually does not fly above 1000 meters, hence we only saw it on the Eastern fringes of the Park.


there are different forms of female, all very rare.
