Battus crassus flies from Costa Rica to the entire Amazon basin (Bollino & Onore 2001). in the Oriente flies subspecies Battus crassus crassus.


we found it at San Isidro, near rios Pastaza and Shankaime where we also collected a male which looks quite like subspecies B. crassus lepidus which flies on the other side of the Andes.

on the top row :
   - left a typical Battus crassus crassus,
   - right, a specimen quite similar to B. crassus lepidus,
both butterflies were collected the same day at rio Shankaime.
